Evergreen threw her book down and looked around the room in frustration. She had read the same page three times over and none of it was going in. All she could think about was Heath going on his date with a woman he’d had the best sex of his life with. She was insanely jealous and she didn’t know why. She didn’t want a relationship with Heath, or anyone, come to that. But she couldn’t stop picturing him kissing this other woman, when what she really wanted was for him to kiss her.

She looked at her watch. It was just gone eight. He’d probably be at the restaurant by now or, even worse, in Scarlet’s bed.

Why had she pushed him to go on this date if she felt like this? She sighed. She knew why, because she couldn’t give him what he was looking for.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door of Christmas Tree Cottage and she lifted her head to see Heath standing there, looking very smart in a white shirt. He must be on his way out.

She hurried to answer the door, backing away to let him in. ‘Hey, aren’t you supposed to be at the restaurant by now?’

He stepped into the room and shut the door. Tiny flakes of snow clung to his hair and his eyelashes and she resisted the urge to sweep them away. He stamped his feet to get rid of the snow on his boots and then turned to look at her.

‘I cancelled.’

She felt a swirl of emotions hit her in the stomach: relief, guilt, joy, confusion.

‘But why?’

‘Because I wanted to be with you.’

‘Heath, I told you, that isn’t going to happen—’

He stepped closer and the words dried in her throat. ‘It doesn’t matter. It makes no difference whether you leave here after Christmas and we haven’t even shared a kiss. I didn’t cancel with the hope that I could pick up with you instead. I cancelled because if I’d gone on that date, all I would have been able to think about was you, about how I wanted to be with you, talk with you. I’d be thinking about what it feels like to hold you in my arms and what it would feel like to kiss you and make love to you. And I know you don’t want that but if I was with her thinking of you, that would make me a complete dick and I’m not that kind of man. No woman deserves that. I know my past with women has always been casual, nothing serious, but when I’m with a woman, I’m with her, one hundred percent. So I had to cancel. It wouldn’t have been fair to Scarlet otherwise.’

Evergreen stared at him in shock. He wanted to kiss her and make love to her. He had cancelled his date with Scarlet because he had feelings for her. Her heart soared.

‘But… aren’t you disappointed? You had your hopes pinned on a happy ending with her, marriage, kids. You wanted to settle down with her.
